We have two types of cable TV service for students depending on where you live. Both services are provided by Time Warner Cable (TWC), and both are provided at no cost.
If you live in a college house or in Prémontré or Xanten Halls
Service in college houses and Prémontré & Xanten Halls is a standard home-type service. Each unit is equipped with a digital adapter, which allows most any modern digital TV to receive channels using the provided box. For the best picture quality, we recommend a TV with an HDMI port.
Support for any issues with channels or reception in a college house or in the Prémontré or Xanten Halls is provided by TWC. Working directly with TWC allows you to make an appointment should they need to send a technician out for troubleshooting. You can reach TWC Bulk Account Support at 844-725-4323. The representative may ask for your address (Prémontré is 420 College Ave, Xanten is 436 College Ave). If you've worked with TWC and still need assistance, please contact the ITS Service Desk.
To connect: Connect an HDMI cable (not provided) from the provided digital adapter to your TV. Switch the input source on your TV to the HDMI input. Use the remote for the digital adapter to select channels.
If you live in any other residence hall on campus
Service in residence halls is provided by a business cable TV account through TWC. A modern TV with a QAM tuner is required in order to receive the digital signal from TWC. The QAM tuner allows for direct reception of digital cable channels without the use of a set-top box. Some older TVs without the QAM tuner may be able to receive the signal with an appropriate digital adapter (not provided). We recommend you research the make/model of your TV or of any TV you'll be purchasing to be sure that it has a QAM tuner.
Support for any issues with channels or reception is provided by the ITS Service Desk.
TWC does not provide a list of specific TVs that will work with their service. But our students have reported that the following brands are working well:
There may certainly be additional brands that work well. Generally speaking, we recommend sticking with a known name brand.
Our students have reported trouble using these brands:
To connect: connect a coax cable from the wall jack to your TV. Use your TV's setup menu to scan for new channels. You should receive at least 70 channels. Use your TV's remote to control the channels.
Faculty and Staff:
Digital high-definition cable TV is available for use in offices, conference rooms, or other areas of campus. Departments are responsible for purchasing a TV as well as paying a monthly fee (charged to an org by ITS). ITS staff can assist in determining and purchasing an appropriate TV.
