New Employee Tech Checklist

Welcome to St. Norbert College! We're eager to work with you and to make help you get familiar with our services.

There is much to know about using technology on our campus. The info in this article will touch on a number of key services that we feel you'll need to know as you get started.

Schedule Time With The Service Desk

If you're helping to get a new employee setup with their computer, account, etc, feel free to schedule a half hour with us, perhaps on their first day. You can attend as well, or it can just be us and the new employee. We'll use the time to review the checklist below and answer any questions. To do that, please follow these steps:

  1. Use this link to start the event on your calendar.
  2. Add Donny Bouressa (Service Desk Team Lead) to the event. 
  3. Choose a date/time that works.
  4. Ener a location (your office, ITS Service Desk, or Zoom)

The Checklist

⬜ Your Account and Password

All of us have a unique six-letter login ID as well as a unique email address. When logging in, no matter which one of these you use, the password is the same. You can set your password at any time here:

We also use Google 2-Step Verification to further secure your account.

Your email address is used to login to your Google Workspace account. Once logged in, you'll have access to your email, calendar, drive, etc.

Email - When you first get into your email account, be sure to create a signature that will be applied to every email you send. It's common to include your name, title, phone number, etc. Just look at other emails you receive or check with a coworker in your department. We have a number of articles in our Email category which you may find helpful.

Calendar - You'll probably start scheduling meetings or be invited to meetings right away. Be sure to get familiar with how calendar works. We have a number of articles in our Calendar category which you may find helpful, especially the one about Calendar Etiquette.

Drive - We use Drive to store and share files with each other. The best way to learn how to use it is to just go there and try the "New" button in the upper left, which allows you to create a new folder, a new document, etc. Once in a document, you can click on "File" then "Share" to see how to share it with someone else.

Your six-letter login ID is used to login to other services like your computer, KnightLine (for employee info), Zoom (for virtual meetings), etc.

⬜ How To Request Support

Besides your password, the first thing we want you to know is how you can reach us, when you can reach us, when you should reach us, etc. All of these details are available in this article:

If you experience an outage of any kind, feel free to check the above page to make sure we already know about it and are working on it. While on the page, click the green "SUBSCRIBE" button to receive notifications of issues via email or text message.

⬜ Your Computer

Many college employees are assigned a refresh-eligible computer based on their role. This means that the computer will be automatically replaced by the ITS Service Desk on a regular basis. More details about this process are available in our article "Can I Get A New Computer?" as well as in our Computer Refresh Program.

Be aware that operating system updates on all college-owned computers are controlled centrally by ITS staff. You should expect to occasionally see a message on your computer advising you that updates are available, requiring you to restart your computer. Since it's not always convenient to restart immediately, you'll have the option to delay such an update, but not for long. We recommend proceeding with the update at the end of your work day.

⬜ Email Lists

We are all on certain email lists automatically. All faculty are on the faculty list, staff are on the staff list, students are on the students list. ⬜ Video Meetings

We have two products available for video meetings: Google Meet and Zoom. You can use either one. We recommend that you simply test each one to make sure your camera and microphone are working as expected.

In both of the examples above, you'll simply be joining a real meeting, but with you as the only attendee. This allows you to test your camera and mic, change your settings, etc. We also have many articles that explain the functions of these tools.

⬜ Network

Our internet access is fast. Really fast. We have a standard wired network for traditional computers. We also have a wireless network named "snc", which is available inside all buildings, on all floors. In order to get your device on any network (laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc), you must first register it by visiting and following the prompts. Additional articles are available in our Network Device Registration category.

Note that we also have a wireless network named "sncguest", which is for (you guessed it) our guests. Feel free to offer this to any visitors you may have (device registration is not required). The "sncguest" network is not appropriate for use by employees.

Certain employees, based on their role, may need VPN access to use necessary services. More details about that are available in our VPN article.

⬜ Office Suite

Our main office suite is Google Workspace, which allows you to create Docs, Sheets, and Slides. All such files are stored in Google Drive. The best way to get started is to visit Google Drive then click the "New" button in the upper left. As long as you're already logged into your email account, then you're ready to go. 

You can also use Keep to make simple notes.

We also have a license to use Microsoft Office 365, which is already installed on most computers. With 365, you can use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

⬜ Printing

Printing is simple. Email your document to, walk up to any printer, scan the code or swipe your ID card, and release it. You can also install any campus printer on your computer so that you can use a traditional File/Print method. If you do use the File/Print method (which most of us do), don't forget about the email method (which is what all of our students use); it comes in handy if your printer is being serviced.

All printing costs are charged to your department.
