To get started registering your Amazon Echo or Echo Dot, have these things ready to go:
- smartphone already connected to "snc" wifi network
- Alexa app installed on your smartphone
- Echo or Echo Dot ready to plug in
You should first know that setting up an Amazon Echo on the SNC network requires and extra step or two than it does when setting it up at home. We'll use a combination of Amazon's steps along with our own registration process.
Connect Your Smartphone and Your Echo
Start by getting your smartphone connected to the Echo. The exact steps depend on which device you have and how old it is. Amazon's articles will be helpful with this step:
This connection process will include a step where your smartphone connects directly to the device's own wifi network (usually something like "Amazon-123") instead of the "snc" network. While connected directly to the Echo, continue with this next step to get the MAC address.
Once you can see your Echo device in the Alexa app on your smartphone, go into the settings for that specific device and find the MAC address. It will look something like this: A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6
The exact location of the MAC address varies by device, but it's usually found in the "About" option of the device. Some newer Echo devices have a screen, which allows you to navigate through its own settings to find the MAC address.
At some point in the process, you will need to switch your smartphone back to the "snc" network; in this step, your phone will automatically send all the wifi info over to the Echo, so that it can also connect to the "snc" network. But it won't work quite yet.
Register Your Echo
Now that you have the MAC address, use the Device Registration form to register it on our network. Upon submitting the registration form, you'll receive an email with further instructions. One key step in those instructions will be to restart the Echo device. When instructed to do this, the easiest way is to simply unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
After it's registered, test it with this simple command: "Alexa, what's the weather?"
We occasionally see Echo devices that require an extra step for us to get it working. Our campus network is much more complicated than a home network, so this is not unusual.
