Modules in Canvas LMS are a powerful organizational tool that allows instructors to structure course content in a logical and sequential manner. Modules provide a way to arrange resources, assignments, quizzes, and discussions in a cohesive learning path. Modules is the default "home page" of each course that is created, but you can change this setting.
What are Modules?
Modules are a feature in Canvas that allow you to organize course content into units, topics, or weeks. They serve as a structure for delivering content in a logical sequence. Instructors can create modules to guide students through the course, ensuring they access content in a predetermined order.
Modules can contain a variety of items, including files, assignments, quizzes, discussions, and external URLs. Instructors can also use modules to provide additional instructions, resources, and navigation for students.
To view the modules category, navigate to your Canvas course. You will see the following options at the top of the page:
Collapse All: Collapses all the items underneath each module. The module name will still be seen.
View Progress: Shows individual student progress through the course. You can select the student you want to view on the right hand side of the screen.
Export Course Content: Will export you Canvas course and save it as a zip file.
Publish All: Will publish all items that are currently unpublished.
+Module: Will add a new module to your course.
When adding a module, first name the module (1), decide whether you want to lock the module until a specific time/date (2), and decide whether you want students to complete a different module as a prerequisite to accessing the module you are creating (3). Click on "Add Module" when you are done:
When you are ready add something to a module, click on the grey "+" button on the right hand side of the module:
The default selection will be to add an assignment to the module. You can choose from assignments that have already been created and exist within the course by clicking on the assignment (1) or you can add a new assignment by selecting "Create Assignment" (2). You will be prompted to fill out assignment details before clicking "Add item":
If you want to add something other than an assignment, click on the dropdown box:
You can choose to create/upload a quiz, file, page, discussion, text header (similar to a label in Moodle), an external URL, or an External Tool and click "Add item":
If you want to edit any of the items, add more details to them, or delete them, you can edit the individual items by clicking on the three vertical buttons found on the right hand size of the page:
