Announcements in Canvas

The Announcements feature in Canvas allows instructors to communicate important information, updates, and reminders to students within a course. Students can acknowledge to the announcement if the instructor allows.

Once an announcement is generated, Canvas automatically notifies students based on their chosen notification preferences (email and push notification, email or push notification, or no notification). The email notification only states that there is a new announcement, but not the contents of the announcement. Students can change these settings in their account notifications. Additionally, indicators for unread and read announcements are provided for easy tracking.

Create an announcement

Locate the "Announcements" portion of the side navigation of the course you wish to post an announcement:

Click on "+Announcement" to create an announcement:

Fill out the blank fields to draft your title and your announcement using the rich text editor:

By default, the announcement will go to all sections within the course, but you can choose to send to one specific section from the dropdown menu:

You can select to delay posting until a certain point, enable podcast feed, or allow students to like the post to acknowledge:

Click "Publish" when you are ready to post:

Students will be be able to view the announcement in their announcement tab:

Reminder: Canvas notifies students based on their chosen notification preferences (email and push notification, email or push notification, or no notification). The email notification only states that there is a new announcement, but not the contents of the announcement. Students can change these settings in their account notifications. **Note as the instructor, you will not receive an email notification of your announcement unless you also change your notification settings.

If you are hoping to send a message that all students will see no matter their notification settings, consider using the SNC generated class e-mail lists. Class email lists follow the format: "TermClass@snc.edu" (ex: FA24PHIL120A@snc.edu). More information can be found on the Email Lists webpage.
