There are numerous ways to communicate to students in Canvas. Two are Announcements and the Inbox. One major difference between these communication methods is how students are notified.
In announcements, after you post a message, students are notified according to their notification settings (email and push notification, email or push notification, or no notification). The email notification only states that there is a new announcement, but not the contents of the announcement. Students can change these settings in their account notifications.
With the inbox, students are notified by both message in their inbox through Canvas and to their SNC email. Students see the full message in both places. The inbox acts like the announcements feature used in Moodle.
