Google Assignments in an integration with Canvas that allows you to use google templates with your students and also allows you to take advantage of the comment and mark-up features of Google Docs. It also provides originality reports for students helping ensure authenticity in their work.
To create a Google Assignment, first create a NEW Canvas assignment. If you need assistance creating a new assignment follow these directions.
After adding the assignment details, under Submission Type, select External Tool. Click on Find and choose Google Assignments.
The first time you create a Google Assignment in your course you will need to Link your Google Account to Assignments. Click the Link button.
Another pop-up will open. Click on the Link button to confirm that you want to Link your Google Account.
You will then be prompted with a Create a Google assignment window and have some choices.
First, if you want you can check for plagiarism (originality), but know that you can only do this for 5 total assignments in your course. Here is more information about Google’s originality reports.
In addition, you can choose to grade the assignment as a Google Assignment or using Canvas SpeedGrader.
**Most professors use Google Assignments because they want to take advantage of Google’s commenting and editing capabilities in which case we would recommend you grade the assignment using Google Assignments. However, either option is fine.
After making your selections click Create.
This will bring you back to the Configure External Tool window. Click the Select button (Google Assignments should still be selected).
Last, click the box that says “Load This Tool in a New Tab."
Finish adding the additional details to your assignment including Submission Attempts and Assignment Dates.
