Your course's home page in Canvas is the first thing students see when they enter your course—it's your front door, welcome mat, and guidepost all in one. Whether you want to feature your course content, a syllabus, or create a custom welcome page, Canvas gives you several options to set the tone and help students navigate your course with ease. This article will walk you through the different home page types available and how to select the one that best fits your teaching style and course goals. Home pages can be changed or adapted at any point.
To select a Home Page, navigate to your course and click on "Choose Home Page" on the right hand side.
You will have 5 options to choose from:
The most commonly used home pages at St. Norbert College have been Modules, Pages, and Syllabus.
Course Activity Stream: Students can see the most recent activity and interactions for the course. It is similar to the recent activity stream on the dashboard, but will only display course specific information.
Example of Course Activity Stream:
Pages: Allows instructors to create their home page to include links, images, or other media. Students can interact with the page.
Example of Pages:
Modules: Allows instructors to organize the course into modules, topics, or sections. Using this type helps outline the course and shows the assignments and resources required in the course.
Example of Modules:
Assignments List: Allows instructors to bring students to the assignments tab and lists them with overdue, upcoming, and recent assignments.
Example of Assignments List:
Syllabus: Allows instructors to display a digital version of the syllabus (based on available assignments on Canvas) with the added bonus of a customizable rich text editor.
